Starfish

Yet another of my favourite things, a beautiful starfish.
I have a collection of different sizes and shapes, white ones, a blue one and some little tiny ones. They all sit on the shelf in the bathroom displayed with pebbles, shells and sea urchins, so I see them every day. I bought them over the years from shell shops or flower shops, they are not found on our beaches.
When I was teaching they were always a favourite drawing lesson, the children loved the shapes. For an observational drawing I encouraged the children to really look at the patterns on the starfish. I often pick them up and just look, they really are so interesting.
My pencil drawing still remains at this "work in progress" stage. I like it here, sort of half done, yet you know what it is. Maybe that is how it is going to stay.

This is totally charming. I always think I'd rather see natural things in a bathroom and not just pictures with no rhyme or reason in a bathroom. Good choice in my book.

I think this "suggestion of starfish" is lovely where it is, I agree with you. There's something almost magical about it just the way it is...

'Tis lovely.
Even better ... keep this one as it is and then do another and progress as you had originally intended ... post it and then we can all have the best of both worlds!!

Hello Milly,

I do know what you mean about beginning a closely observed drawing of something, and along the way of that process, getting to a point at which you step back. Think. Look again. Think and consider again.

Is that drawing complete in itself. Do I want to work on it some more to see where that might lead. Or stop.

Begin another drawing of the same or a similar image, and do some more exploring. Thinking just now of M Monet and his haystacks.

Best wishes, xo

milly i love the delicate detail in your work, when i try it never comes out quite right. back at art college i had a ceramics tutor who drew very much like you do, she was an inspiration too. it woulbe wonderful to find a starfish would it not. i do come across lots of tint sea urchins here though. have a fab day x

Thanks for your comment on my raspberries! I just love the starfish. And I think it looks great as-is. I think the 'unfinished' sections actually balance the detailed sections very nicely. Makes it look like it is awash in sunlight, laying on the beach. :)

I like it the way it is, the good thing about computers and scanners is that you can scan the work now and then if you decide to do more you have two versions saved.

Another simple one but yet packed with so much details! I love how everything seems to be protruding from the flat paper whenever you put your pen into something :) It's just amazing!
Thanks for your comments on my drawings too ^^
